BTS, short for Bangtan Sonyeondan, is a South Korean K-pop group formed by Big Hit Entertainment in 2013. Its seven members, born between 1992 and 1997, span an age gap of five years. This gap may seem small from a European perspective, but it profoundly shapes interactions within the group, the distribution of vocal roles, and stage dynamics.
The Korean Age System and Its Impact on BTS’s Hierarchy
Before listing the birth dates, a contextual detail changes the interpretation of these ages. Since June 28, 2023, international age is the reference in South Korean administrative documents. Previously, the traditional system counted a person as one year old at birth and added an additional year every Lunar New Year.
This administrative reform has not erased social customs. The codes of respect between elders (hyung) and younger members remain deeply rooted in Korean culture and in BTS’s daily functioning. Jin, as the oldest member, retains a special status in the group, while Jungkook remains the “maknae” (youngest) regardless of the calculation method.
To accurately compare the ages of BTS members, it is essential to specify the system used. Automatically adding one year to the international age no longer reflects the official norm, even if this habit persists in some conversations among fans.

Birth Dates and Ages of Each BTS Member
The seven members are divided into three main birth years: 1992-1993 for the older line, 1995 for the central duo, and 1997 for the youngest.
- Jin (Kim Seok-jin): born on December 4, 1992, in Anyang. The oldest of the group.
- Suga (Min Yoon-gi): born on March 9, 1993, in Daegu. Rapper and producer, he is the second oldest in the group.
- J-Hope (Jung Ho-seok): born on February 18, 1994, in Gwangju. Main dancer and rapper, he occupies the middle position in the age hierarchy.
- RM (Kim Nam-joon): born on September 12, 1994. Leader of the group despite his fourth position by age, illustrating that leadership in K-pop does not automatically go to the oldest.
- Jimin (Park Ji-min): born on October 13, 1995, in Busan. Singer and dancer, he shares his birth year with V.
- V (Kim Tae-hyung): born on December 30, 1995, in Daegu. A few weeks separate his birth from Jimin’s, placing them at the same rank in the traditional Korean age system based on the calendar year.
- Jungkook (Jeon Jung-kook): born on September 1, 1997, in Busan. The youngest of the group, he was just fifteen years old when BTS debuted in June 2013.
Why RM is the Leader Without Being the Oldest
In K-pop, the role of leader is assigned by the management agency based on several criteria: seniority within the agency, ability to communicate with the staff, stage charisma, and ability to unite.
This distinction between age and leadership creates a unique dynamic. Jin, who is two years older, retains the respect associated with his elder status in daily life, while RM takes on the public voice of the group, handling interviews and official speeches.
Age Gap and Group Dynamics in K-pop
Five years separate Jin from Jungkook. In a K-pop group, this gap is sufficient for interactions between elders and younger members to follow distinct politeness codes. Members born in the same year (Jimin and V, or RM and J-Hope) naturally use informal language with each other, while Jungkook uses a more formal register with Jin or Suga.
These linguistic nuances, often imperceptible in English or French translations of BTS content, nonetheless shape the group’s humor, its running gags, and the distribution of speaking time in interviews. Long-time ARMY fans easily spot moments when Jungkook shifts from one register to another depending on whether he is addressing Jimin or Jin.

The Jimin-V Case: Same Year, Special Bond
Jimin and V, both born in 1995, share what Koreans call the status of “chingu” (friends of the same age). This status allows them a verbal and physical closeness that other pairs in the group do not share in the same way. Their friendship, documented since their trainee years, is often cited by fans as one of the most visible relationships within BTS.
Korean Age, International Age: Which Reference to Use Today
The South Korean reform of 2023 simplified the legal framework, but some administrative rules continue to rely on the year of birth rather than international age. Military conscription, a mandatory process for South Korean male citizens, is a direct example that has affected each BTS member.
For fans following the group from abroad, remembering the birth dates remains the most reliable method. International age is simply calculated from these dates, without artificial addition. The old traditional system, which could create a one- to two-year discrepancy with actual age, is no longer the norm in official Korean documents.
Seven members, five years apart, three possible age systems: the question of age in BTS goes beyond mere biographical curiosity. It touches on Korean cultural codes, the internal structure of a K-pop group, and the management choices that made RM the leader of a formation where he is not the oldest.
